What is ecoimmunology?

Ecoimmunology is an emerging interdisciplinary field of biology that integrates the study of evolutionary ecology and immunology. The field focuses on animals and how they interact with their environment and how these interactions influence their immune system. The discipline also explores how pathogens and parasites shape the evolutionary trajectories of an animal’s immune system. Ecological factors such as habitat quality, resource availability, temperature, social interactions, and exposure to pollutants can also influence an organism's immune function and its ability to combat diseases. Ultimately, these factors can alter the immune response, which affects an organism's fecundity and survival.

Prospective Students

The Slade Lab's mission is to provide a welcoming, diverse, and equitable space. This space includes undocumented students. If you are an undocumented student and want to do research in the Slade Lab, please do not hesitate to contact me. I promise to be confidential if you want to speak about this matter.

Undergraduate Students

Independent Study (BIOL 190): Space is limited based on the time of year and a student’s schedule. Year-round offers lab experience, but spring is the best period for students who want to gain field experience. During the spring, I will highly prefer students who can do field work over those that can do lab work.

Students with hectic work schedules should not promise to be available for field work, as this requires schedule flexibility. For lab work, students should be free during a 9 to 5 schedule when they first start in the lab, so my schedule overlaps with yours. Once students acquire their lab-based skills, then I will allow them to come in during off hours.

Volunteers: I accept volunteers, but do so with caution. Independent studies are preferred as students will be graded on the quality of their work and dedication to their project.

Graduate (MS) students

The Slade Lab is looking for a graduate student (MS) to start spring 2025.

Prospective graduate students should email Dr. Joel Slade (he/him/his) with a CV, statement of interest, unofficial undergraduate transcripts, and two references.
